As part of his new commission for the Hepworth Wakefield, Adams collaborated with dancers from The Garage Dance Ensemble, a dance group based in Okiep, South Africa. During the workshops, Adams placed raw canvases on the floor and applied various acrylic paint colours and silica sand to a sheet of plastic placed underneath the canvas. He then asked the dancers to perform on top of the canvases. The dancers’ movements left marks and impressions on the undersides of the canvases. Adams refers to these painted canvases as 'monotypes' and used them as templates for a new series of tapestries, some of which are now being presented at the Hepworth Wakefield. Each work in this unique edition series is a segment of a larger canvas that was used during the workshops.

This editions has been kindly donated by Igshaan Adams in support of The Hepworth Wakefield, The Garage Dance Ensemble and BEN-GEN Youth.

About the Artist:

Igshaan Adams was born in 1982 in Bonteheuwel, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. He grew up navigating the complexities of identity under apartheid’s racial classification system. His work spans a wide spectrum, encompassing intricate tapestries, expansive floor and wall-based installations, and immersive suspended sculptures. Adams’ work focuses on the nuanced remnants of human experiences, examining the impressions – ranging from the barely perceptible to the obvious – left by individuals within their homes, cities, natural environments, and their own bodies.

Only one of each edition is available per customer - multiple print orders will automatically be cancelled and refunded.
