Artist duo Quinlan and Hastings were commissioned to create a special lithograph as part of The Hepworth Wakefield’s School Prints editions programme. Quinlan & Hastings's large mural painting Republic was donated to our collection in 2022.
The artwork
The lithograph entitled Angelus Novus, 2025 takes its title from the artists' recent fresco of the same name. It depicts two androgynous figures, dressed as angels, walking towards the viewer, away from a building with windows taped with white crosses, hinting that it is set during a period of war. In their paintings, the artist duo often explore and reflect on different moments in history in a playful way. They describe the angels as guardians of time, watching and learning from the past in order to help make the future better. Quinlan & Hastings selected this work for School Prints because the original programme, which was established in the 1940s during a period of rebuilding post-war, gave an interesting new context to the work.
The artists created the lithograph through an eight-colour printing process, using hand-drawn stencils and photographically reworked layers to achieve rich, luminous tones, allowing subtle variations in texture and density similar to their fresco works. While retaining the core imagery, the lithographic technique introduces a new physicality, with visible layers and ink saturation emphasising the constructed nature of the image.
Profits raised from the sale of this edition support the School Prints in depth engagement programme. Helping to fulfil our ambition that every child in Wakefield has a meaningful experience with art before they leave Primary school.

Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings are an artist duo working in film, drawing, installation and performance. Their work examines the behaviours, history, politics and artefacts of LGBTQ+ culture in the western context, exploring how this culture is reflective of broader societal structures. Their collaborative practice uses film as part documentary and research, and part cinematic experience with an expert use of sound, colour, and camerawork.
Quinlan and Hastings use the traditional medium of fresco painting to depict street scenes showing groups of people portraying various power dynamics, class and social relations and positions of authority. Their collaborative work is linked to their ongoing research and exploration into the relationship between public space, architecture, state infrastructure, gender and sexual identity, asking viewers to question what public space looks like.

Each frame is made by hand, using state of the art equipment, conservation level materials and FSC timbers and acrylic.
