The Hepworth Wakefield recently acquired three photographs by Rene Matić through the generosity of Spirit Now London and Russell Tovey. To celebrate the acquisition, we are excited to release a limited edition print by Matić.

Rene Matić‘s edition How Exhausting (2024) originates from a Polaroid taken by the artist in 2019, a time when Matić was deeply engaged with subcultures and exploring personal identity. Recreated in its original form and physicality, the ‘Polaroid’ image is collaged onto embossed paper. The jacket depicted had been bleached and repurposed as a canvas by the artist to host Matić’s patch collection - each patch serving as a different identity marker, or as Dick Hebdige put it, ‘a token of self-imposed exile’.

For Matić, the image functions as a self-portrait, encapsulating their sense of exhaustion, of so many selves to uncover and try to make sense of. The juxtaposition of patches like "Black Girl Magic" and "Skinhead: A Way of Life" reflects this inner conflict. Matić describes taking the Polaroid as an attempt to “flatten” all these conflicting identities. The title, How Exhausting, becomes a way of acknowledging the overwhelming nature of this search for self-meaning—an embrace of the in-between, of being rude, and of interrupting.

As is traditional in edition publishing, the price of the edition may increase as it sells out.

Rene Matić (b. 1997, Peterborough, UK)  is a London-based artist and writer whose practice spans across photography, film, and sculpture. They intertwine photography, words, performance and subculture to explore identity in powerfully intimate ways. They earned a BFA from Central St Martins in 2020 and work across photography, film, and sculpture to examine their personal history, identity, and the in-between spaces they occupy within British society. Matić's work draws on the concepts of glitch feminism and reflects their experiences as a "mixed-race non-binary femme" in Britain. For Frieze London 2024, Deutsche Bank invited Matić to intervene in their lounge, with visitors generously invited into Matić’s tender and personal inner world. Their work has also been featured in solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Gartenhaus in Vienna (2023), South London Gallery and Quench Gallery in Margate, UK (2022), Arcadia Missa, and VITRINE Gallery in London, UK (2021). Matić has also participated in group exhibitions at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry (2023), High Art in Arles, France (2022), Sadie Coles HQ in London (2022), Bold Tendencies in London (2021), Bloomberg New Contemporaries at South London Gallery, and Schlossmuseum in Linz, Austria (2020).
